Day One Recap of the 2022 Mustang World Series

Game One: Laredo, TX 12, Smithfield, VA 8


Even though they ended the first inning in a 2-2 tie, it was a back-and-forth battle for Laredo, TX and Smithfield, VA.


In the top of the second, Laredo scored on an error by the catcher to take a one-run lead. However, Smithfield’s offense came alive as well. A triple by Nathan Nelson brought in three runs, establishing a Smithfield lead. He was brought in on a single later in the inning to make it a 6-3 game.


Neither team scored in the third, so both were eager to get back on track.


Laredo scored first in the top of the fourth, utilizing two singles and a walk to make it a tied game at 6-6. 


Smithfield, however, took advantage of a passed ball to take a 7-6 lead.


In the fifth, Laredo scored two runs on a single and an error by the catcher, but Smithfield was quick to return it to an 8-8 tie.


Laredo pulled away from Smithfield in the top of the sixth. Running aggressively on errors and passed balls and a single gave Laredo a lead that Smithfield could not come back from, making the final score 12-8.

Game Two: LaPorte, TX 8, Deer Park, TX 2


LaPorte, TX was able to outscore Deer Park, TX, even though both teams were scoreless in the third and fifth innings.


LaPorte got on the board in the bottom of the first with a single after a stolen third base.


They continued scoring in the bottom of the second. A triple started the scoring, but a wild pitch on a walk added a run as well. Another steal made extended LaPorte’s lead to 4-0.


Deer Park got on the board with a single in the top of the fourth inning. However, LaPorte responded with four more runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth.


Two of the four runs scored came from wild pitches, with the other two coming from a single and a triple.


Deer Park looked to make up ground in the top of the sixth inning, but they were only able to score one more running, making the final score 8-2.

Game Three: Orange, CA 21, Youngsville, LA 0


Orange, CA put its foot on the gas and did not let up, beating Youngsville, LA 21-0 in just two and a half innings.


Two doubles in the bottom of the first set Orange up for success, taking a quick 2-0 lead.


Youngsville’s offense never took off, as they could not score in the first two innings before Orange ran away with the game. 


The Orange, CA team set a record for most runs in an inning by a team in the bottom of the second inning with 19 runs, previously held by Placentia, CA for 18 runs in an inning in 2018.

Game Four: Tijuana, MX 5, Erath, LA 3


Tijuana, MX and Erath, LA kept their game close, but in the end, Tijuana pulled out the win.


Tijuana struck first, with a double pop fly to right field and a steal at home, to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.


Erath took advantage of an error by the Tijuana pitcher to tie the game at one apiece. They also took a 2-1 lead at the top of the third inning.


Tijuana responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third. A double brought in one run and set up another for the following single. An error by the Erath catcher allowed Tijuana to take a 4-2 lead.


In the bottom of the fourth, Tijuana scored again; this time on a pop out.


Erath scored on another error by Tijuana’s pitcher to make a 5-3 game, but it was not enough to beat Tijuana.
